Hacienda Las Colinas is not only a Premium ranch, it is also a Project of preservation of the wildlife. We are committed to contribute to the country policy for reforesting and create biological corridors facilitating endangered species to recolonize the region. It is more than 2000 trees which are planted every years. After only 3 years, some animal species have already came back in the area like sloths, squirrel monkeys, wild cats, deer, and few couples of Scarlet Marcaws are now permanent.
At Hacienda Las Colinas, we love chocolate, reason why we will have the pleasure to provide you an amazing tour of our cacao plantations. We also experience vanilla growth, you will probably understand why cacao and vanilla can be an addictive activity for us!

A premium experience
Originally developed for fruit production, until 2006, the property was acquired by US veterinarian citizen to create a premium US standard ranch for growing and train horses and also as a refuge for non curable or retired animals.
In 2020, we acquired the property falling in love with the Hacienda and the surrounding pristine tropical environment. This new departure has been followed by the acquisition of new lands on both sides of the Chires river which gave the current size of the property, 100 hectares (250 acres) of wilderness with 1.6 km (1 mile) of river flowing all year round and several hills providing crazy views on the Talamanca mountains and the Pacific ocean. Our objectives is to share to our visitors our project which is driven according to the following expectations:
- be an active actor of the reforestation of tropical forests of Costa Rica. In 2020, about 30% of the property was covered by primary remaining forests, the rest was pasture land. End of 2022, 37% is covered by trees. Over 2,500 trees have been planted during the first 24 months. We enjoy inviting our visitors to also plant some trees as a personal contribution to the climate change and carbon compensation.
- be an actor of the restoration of disappeared or quasi-disappeared animals by creating biological corridors between recent reforested aeras and primary forests. By planting trees along creeks (usually dried during dry season), we rapidly observe how it modifies the hydrology of the hills. The water flows during longer period in a year, attracting mammals, birds, butterflies, etc. We also facilitate the migration of mammals between the mountains and the pacific ocean coast by maintaining the primary forest along the Rio Chires which provides cooler air, water all year round and connect the different climate between the coast and the mountains. We are so happy when we observe a new family of squirrel monkeys (which have nearly disappeared from Costa Rica 20 years ago), eagles, Ara (Scarlet Macaw) couples, etc.
- Develop new uses of the land by developing responsible agriculture of Cacao and Vanilla with a value creation with new jobs for the community. In late seventies, Costa Rica has seen most of the cacao trees destroyed by a fungus signing the end of the production. During last years, Costa Rica leads a new era for cacao, winning many awards. The Cacao and Chocolate from Costa Rica beans have become among the best cacao in the world. The climate at the hacienda and the quality of the soils offer excellent conditions for creating in the next years one the best chocolate in Costa Rica. We work hard for that. We share our passion to our visitors by visiting the plantations and they also discover some basic principles of the permaculture that we put in place.
- Discover the Authentic Costa Rica in the best way, on horseback. The relationship between the horses and our visitors transform their journey in Costa Rica. It is a unique experience, probably the best souvenir. This experience has transformed us in 2020 too. From the top of the hills or crossing the river with the horse is just something unforgettable. Our top priority in the training of our horses and the incredible lovely conditions of living we offer to them which explain why they are so nice and easy to ride, especially for beginners. If you do not ride, just look at them and appreciate this land of peace and beauty.
- Live your ranch experience. Most of our visitors want to stay longer and relax a few days. We have built responsible lodging Premium facilities. Our visitors can spend a special time, relaxing and contemplating. Staying 2, 3 or 4 nights, we will offer you a unique and unforgettable break in your life. With over 150 m2 (1600 sqft) of infinite swimming pool on the edge of the hill, 100 m2 (1100 sqft) rancho and confidential lodges, including premium services and a staff devoted to satisfy your needs, we are close to the Paradise!
- Develop the holly land, let us take care of your horse! If you have the chance to own one or several horses or you dream to own one! Our land and facilities are for you with our boarding service for the lucky horse owners in Costa Rica. Our experienced employees, 100% devoting their life for horses, do not make difference between our horses and those onboarded at the hacienda.
